The Russian Bar is a circus act which combines the gymnastic skills of the balance beam, the rebound tempo skills of trampoline and the swing handstand skills of the uneven bars and the parallel bars. The bar itself is a flexible vaulting pole around four meters long, typically made of fiberglass. Two porters, one at each end of the Russian bar control the bar and the movements of the “flyer”. They guide the flyer into tempo swings and transitional aerial moves. The flyer prepares for the bars catapult when the porters give them the ready signal. At the present heights, aerial skills, such as a triple sault, “full-in, full-out” (double twisting doubles) and “Miller” (triple twisting double) somersaults are possible.

This unique, collective performance involves several acrobats at a time. One or two “pushers” leap onto one end of a rocking board from atop a pedestal and catapult the “flyers” into the air. The flyers perform acrobatic feats before returning to the ground, to the shoulder of a team of “carriers”, or to a perch of a chair! This act is as a specialist discipline with roots steaming back to Eastern European countries.
